Anwar Pervez net worth in 2026

Wikipedia’s list of Pakistanis by net worth puts Sir Anwar Pervez at about $3.1 billion. The Sunday Times Rich List has valued him and his family at more than £3 billion in some years and £1.36 billion in 2021, a spread that shows how hard it is to value a private company such as Bestway. From bus conductor to shopkeeper

Anwar Pervez was born on 15 March 1935 in British India and studied at Forman Christian College in Lahore. In 1956, aged 21, he moved to England and worked as a bus conductor and driver in Bradford, often seven days a week.

In the early 1960s he moved to London and opened a small grocery shop in Earl’s Court called Kashmir, selling food for South Asian customers. He added more shops through the 1960s and early 1970s.

Founding Bestway

In 1976 he founded Bestway as a trade-only cash-and-carry wholesaler, opening its first warehouse in Acton, west London, with his own savings and money from friends. Bestway grew into one of the largest independent wholesalers in the UK, supplying convenience stores, restaurants and other independent retailers.

In 2014 the group bought 774 pharmacies from the Co-operative Group for £620 million and rebranded them as Well, now one of the UK’s biggest pharmacy chains.

Bestway in Pakistan

Sir Anwar never cut his ties with Pakistan. Bestway Cement, set up in the 1990s, has become one of the country’s largest cement producers. In 2002 Bestway and the Abu Dhabi Group bought United Bank Limited when it was privatised, and Bestway remains a major shareholder in UBL, one of Pakistan’s biggest banks. For overseas Pakistanis, our guide to the Roshan Digital Account explains how to invest back home through banks such as UBL.

Honours

He was appointed OBE in 1992 and knighted in 1999. Pakistan awarded him the Hilal-i-Pakistan in 2000. In 2025 the UK Parliament hosted an event to mark his 90th birthday and Bestway’s contribution to British business.

Philanthropy

The Bestway Foundation, set up in 1987, gives a share of group profits to education and health projects in the UK and Pakistan. It has donated more than £42.5 million, including scholarships, hospital equipment and disaster relief.

Succession

Sir Anwar is now chairman emeritus. His nephew Lord Zameer Choudrey became chairman on 1 July 2024, with Haider Choudrey as chief executive, while Sir Anwar’s son Dawood Pervez is managing director of Bestway Wholesale.
