Sadruddin Hashwani net worth in 2026
Published estimates for Sadruddin Hashwani’s net worth range from about $2 billion to $4 billion, and a few lists put him lower. We rank him on the midpoint, $3 billion. The spread exists because the Hashoo Group is privately controlled, and its main listed company, Pakistan Services Limited, is only one part of it. His wealth rests mainly on hotel property in Pakistan’s biggest cities, plus oil and gas exploration and other businesses.
Early life and first business
Sadruddin Hashwani was born in Karachi on 19 February 1940 into an Ismaili Khoja family. In 1960 he and his brother founded Hassan Ali and Company, a cotton trading firm that became one of Pakistan’s leading cotton exporters by the 1970s.
In 1973 the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto nationalised the cotton export trade, and the business he had built was taken away.
Building a hotel empire
Hashwani rebuilt in hospitality. In 1981 he opened a Holiday Inn in Karachi, followed by one in Islamabad. Both later became Marriott hotels, which the group still owns.
In 1985 he took majority control of Pakistan Services Limited, which owned the country’s four Inter-Continental hotels. These were rebranded as Pearl-Continental, and the chain has since grown to cover Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Bhurban, Muzaffarabad and other cities, with additional properties under its Hotel One brand.
The 2008 Marriott bombing
On 20 September 2008, a truck bomb exploded outside the Islamabad Marriott, killing more than 50 people and injuring hundreds. It was one of the deadliest attacks in the capital. The hotel was rebuilt and reopened, and its tight security has since become a familiar sight for visitors.
Oil, gas and other businesses
Beyond hotels, the Hashoo Group has interests in oil and gas exploration through Zaver Petroleum, as well as travel, real estate and information technology. The Hashoo Foundation, the family’s charity, runs programmes in education, women’s economic empowerment and skills training, especially in northern Pakistan.
Memoir and controversies
In 2014 he published his autobiography, Truth Always Prevails, which gave a frank account of his dealings with Pakistani governments and politicians. In 2016 he and his son Murtaza Hashwani were named in the Panama Papers, which listed offshore companies linked to many wealthy families worldwide. Being named in the leak did not by itself mean wrongdoing.
Succession
His son Murtaza Hashwani has taken on a leading role in running the Hashoo Group and its hotels.

How the A1 Rich List estimates net worth
We use Forbes’ real-time figure where Forbes tracks a person. For everyone else we use the most widely cited published estimate, from sources such as Wikipedia’s list of Pakistanis by net worth, the Sunday Times Rich List and Pakistani business publications, and we name the source on each profile. Where reports give a range, we rank on the midpoint. Private companies are hard to value, so treat every estimate as a guide rather than an exact figure.
