Syed Babar Ali net worth in 2026

Early life
Syed Babar Ali was born in Lahore on 30 June 1926. His father, Syed Maratib Ali, was a businessman and army contractor, and his brothers Syed Amjad Ali, Syed Wajid Ali and Syed Azfal Ali also became prominent in business and public life.
Building Packages and Milkpak
In 1957 he founded Packages Limited in Lahore with Swedish partners to make paper and board packaging, at a time when Pakistan imported most of it. Packages grew into the country’s leading packaging company and the centre of a wider group with interests in flexible packaging, paper, insurance and investments.
He also founded Milkpak, which brought packaged long-life milk to Pakistan. Milkpak later became Nestlé Pakistan, now one of the country’s largest food companies. In 1970 he was among the founders of the Lahore Stock Exchange.
LUMS and education
His best-known legacy may be the Lahore University of Management Sciences, which he founded in the 1980s and which became one of Pakistan’s leading universities. He also set up the Ali Institute of Education in 1992 to train teachers, and Shalamar Medical and Dental College in Lahore.
Public service and conservation
In 1993 he served as caretaker federal finance minister. A lifelong conservationist, he was active in the World Wide Fund for Nature from 1972 and served as its international president from 1996 to 1999, succeeding Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
He was appointed an honorary OBE in 1997 and has received honours from Sweden, the Netherlands and McGill University.
Why his story matters
Few business leaders anywhere have built companies, a university and a conservation record over seven decades. His career shows a model of wealth tied closely to institutions that outlast their founders. How the A1 Rich List estimates net worth
We use Forbes’ real-time figure where Forbes tracks a person. For everyone else we use the most widely cited published estimate, from sources such as Wikipedia’s list of Pakistanis by net worth, the Sunday Times Rich List and Pakistani business publications, and we name the source on each profile. Where reports give a range, we rank on the midpoint. Private companies are hard to value, so treat every estimate as a guide rather than an exact figure.
