The passport fee in Pakistan depends on four choices: the type of passport, the number of pages, how many years it is valid for, and how fast you need it. The cheapest option costs Rs4,500 and the most expensive Rs40,500, so it pays to know what you are choosing before you reach the counter.
This guide lists the official fees published by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP), explains the difference between a machine-readable passport and an e-passport, and shows how long each service takes.
Table of Contents
Passport fee in Pakistan at a glance
The most common choice, a 36-page machine-readable passport valid for five years, costs Rs4,500 on normal processing and Rs7,500 on urgent processing. Fast Track service for the same passport costs Rs12,500. A 36-page e-passport valid for five years starts at Rs9,000.
Machine-readable passport (MRP) fees
The MRP is the standard Pakistani passport. These are DGIP’s published fees:
- 36 pages, 5 years: Rs4,500 normal, Rs7,500 urgent
- 36 pages, 10 years: Rs6,700 normal, Rs11,200 urgent
- 72 pages, 5 years: Rs8,200 normal, Rs13,500 urgent
- 72 pages, 10 years: Rs12,400 normal, Rs20,200 urgent
For most people a 36-page passport is enough. Choose 72 pages if you travel often or need many visas, because running out of pages means paying for a new passport early.
The 10-year passport is good value: a 36-page 10-year normal passport costs Rs6,700, against Rs9,000 for two five-year passports bought over the same period.
Fast track passport fees
Fast Track is the quickest service for an MRP. DGIP revised its fees with effect from 8 May 2024:
- 36 pages: Rs12,500 for 5 years, Rs16,200 for 10 years
- 72 pages: Rs18,500 for 5 years, Rs25,200 for 10 years
According to DGIP, a fast track passport is issued in two working days. Fast Track is available only for the machine-readable passport, not the e-passport.
e-Passport fees
The e-passport has a chip that stores your details and biometric data, which can speed up checks at some airports. It costs about twice as much as an MRP:
- 36 pages, 5 years: Rs9,000 normal, Rs15,000 urgent
- 36 pages, 10 years: Rs13,500 normal, Rs22,500 urgent
- 72 pages, 5 years: Rs16,500 normal, Rs27,000 urgent
- 72 pages, 10 years: Rs24,750 normal, Rs40,500 urgent
Both types are valid for international travel. The e-passport is a convenience, not a requirement, so the MRP is the sensible choice if you want to keep costs down.
How long each service takes
- Normal: around 21 working days.
- Urgent: around 5 working days.
- Fast Track (MRP only): around 2 working days.
These are typical times. Delays can happen during busy periods, before Hajj and Umrah seasons, or when printing backlogs build up, so apply well before you need to travel.
Applying for a new passport
First-time applicants in Pakistan apply in person at a regional passport office or one of the passport counters in NADRA offices. You need your original CNIC. Children need a B-Form, and parents normally accompany them with their own CNICs.
At the office, your photograph and fingerprints are taken, your details are confirmed from NADRA’s record, and you pay the fee. Keep the receipt with your token number, because you need it to track your application and collect the passport.
Renewing a passport online
If you already have a machine-readable passport, you can renew it online through DGIP’s portal at onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk. The service is available to eligible applicants in Pakistan and overseas. You upload a photograph, enter your details, and pay the fee by debit or credit card. Overseas Pakistanis can receive the new passport through the relevant embassy or consulate.
Online renewal saves a trip to the passport office and the queue that comes with it. Make sure you use the official portal: DGIP warns that payments made through other websites are not its responsibility.
Tracking your application
You can track progress on DGIP’s online tracking page using the token number on your receipt. Keep that number safe until you have collected the passport.
Which passport should you choose?
- Occasional traveller on a budget: 36-page MRP, 10 years, normal processing (Rs6,700).
- Frequent traveller: 72-page MRP, 10 years (Rs12,400 normal), so you do not run out of pages.
- Urgent trip in a week: urgent processing; for a 36-page five-year MRP that is Rs7,500.
- Emergency travel in two or three days: Fast Track MRP from Rs12,500.
- Want the chip passport: e-passport, from Rs9,000, but no Fast Track option.
Documents you need
The paperwork depends on your situation:
- First passport for an adult: your original CNIC. Your details are taken from NADRA’s record, so make sure your CNIC is valid and correct before you go.
- Renewal: your original CNIC and your previous passport.
- Children: the child’s B-Form or child registration certificate, and the parents’ CNICs. Parents usually need to be present.
- After a change of name or marital status: update your CNIC with NADRA first. The passport office uses NADRA’s data, and a mismatch will hold up the application.
Lost or damaged passport
If your passport is lost or badly damaged, you apply for a replacement rather than a simple renewal. The process involves extra checks and a higher fee than a standard application, and you may be asked for a report of the loss. Check the current requirements with DGIP or your nearest passport office before you go, and report a lost passport promptly so it cannot be misused.
Applying from abroad
Overseas Pakistanis can renew a machine-readable passport online through DGIP’s portal, or apply at a Pakistani embassy or consulate. Fees paid abroad are set separately from the passport fee in Pakistan and are usually charged in local currency, so check the mission’s website for the amount that applies to you.
A family example
A family of four planning a holiday, with two adults and two children, choosing 36-page five-year machine-readable passports on normal processing, would pay 4 × Rs4,500 = Rs18,000 in total. The same family choosing urgent processing would pay Rs30,000, and choosing e-passports on normal processing would pay Rs36,000. Planning a few weeks ahead saves the difference.
Mistakes that cause delays
- Leaving it too late. Many countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, so renew well before expiry.
- An expired or incorrect CNIC. Fix your NADRA record first.
- Paying on an unofficial website. Use only DGIP’s own portal for online renewal.
- A poor photograph for online renewal. Follow the portal’s photo rules exactly to avoid rejection.
- Losing the token number. You need it to track and collect your passport.
Knowing the passport fee in Pakistan for each option, and avoiding these mistakes, is usually enough to get a new passport without stress.
Avoid agents and fake websites
You do not need an agent to get a passport. Agents add fees for things you can do yourself, and some promise faster service that they cannot deliver. Fake websites copying the DGIP design also appear regularly, asking for card payments. Use only dgip.gov.pk and onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk, and pay fees only through official channels.
