Zameer Choudrey net worth in 2026
The Sunday Times Rich List valued Lord Choudrey at £1.53 billion in 2020 and ranked him as the second-richest Pakistani-origin person in Britain, behind his uncle. His wealth comes from his shareholding in Bestway, a private company, so the figure is an estimate and moves with the group’s profits and valuation. Bestway reports annual turnover of about £4.5 billion.
Early life
Zameer Mohammed Choudrey was born on 23 March 1958 in Islamabad. He moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 12 and later graduated from the University of Kent in 1981.
Four decades at Bestway
He joined Bestway in 1984 as financial controller, when it was still mainly a cash-and-carry wholesaler in London. He became finance director in 1990 and went on to lead the group’s expansion into Pakistan, where Bestway Cement grew into one of the country’s largest cement producers.
As chief executive of the Bestway Group, he led its biggest deal: the £620 million purchase of the Co-operative Group’s pharmacy business in 2014, which was rebranded as Well. He has sat on the board of United Bank Limited since Bestway and the Abu Dhabi Group bought it in 2002.
On 1 July 2024 he became chairman of Bestway, with Sir Anwar becoming chairman emeritus. His son, Haider Choudrey, is chief executive.
House of Lords and honours
He was appointed CBE in 2016 and received Pakistan’s Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2018. In October 2019 he was made a life peer as Baron Choudrey of Hampstead, and he sits in the House of Lords.
Philanthropy
Lord Choudrey was a founding trustee of the Bestway Foundation in 1987 and has chaired Bestway Foundation Pakistan since 1997. The foundation funds scholarships, hospitals and disaster relief. He has also been a trustee of the grocery industry charity GroceryAid and of Crimestoppers, and has chaired the UK advisory council of the British Asian Trust.
Why he matters
Lord Choudrey is a good example of how wealth is built inside a family firm. He was not the founder, but his work on finance, acquisitions and the Pakistan businesses turned Bestway from a UK wholesaler into an international group. Read the founder’s story in our profile of Sir Anwar Pervez.

How the A1 Rich List estimates net worth
We use Forbes’ real-time figure where Forbes tracks a person. For everyone else we use the most widely cited published estimate, from sources such as Wikipedia’s list of Pakistanis by net worth, the Sunday Times Rich List and Pakistani business publications, and we name the source on each profile. Where reports give a range, we rank on the midpoint. Private companies are hard to value, so treat every estimate as a guide rather than an exact figure.
